MHGM Honored at Annual Campaign For Equal Justice Luncheon
February 27, 2013
Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf was recognized as a Guardian of Justice by the Lawyers’ Campaign for Equal Justice (CEJ) at its annual awards luncheon on Wednesday, February 20th at the Governor Hotel. CEJ honored MHGM and its lawyers as one of five law firms in Oregon whose lawyers contributed on average more than $1,000 per attorney. The firm and its employees donated more than $31,000 to help CEJ provide legal aid services to low income Oregonians.
A portion of the firm’s contributions are earmarked for the Barrie Herbold Fund, an endowment created in memory of MHGM’s co-founding shareholder Barrie Herbold to support legal aid services. This year’s endowment contributions were made in memory of William Mehlhaf, an MHGM shareholder who passed way in 2012.
“Our attorneys and staff are extremely supportive of the Campaign for Equal Justice and the important work it does to enhance access to justice for low income Oregonians,” says MHGM shareholder Jeff Edelson, who is also a CEJ board member and co-chair of the CEJ’s Mid-size Firm Committee. “Private funding through this extraordinary organization has never been more critical to the survival of legal aid programs throughout the state. That is why we have to keep raising the bar.”
Oregon lawyers founded CEJ in 1991, and today more than 270 lawyer volunteers help raise money to support legal aid. Oregon lawyers also do thousands of hours of casework via legal aid’s pro bono programs.
