We believe in professional and civic involvement.

Markowitz Herbold is a leader in the community. Along with generous donations made by attorneys and staff, the firm annually makes substantial financial contributions to the Campaign for Equal Justice, the support organization for Oregon’s legal aid programs, and the St. Andrew Legal Clinic (SALC), which provides low-income families with family law services. In 2006, the firm founded the Taste for Justice Wine Auction to raise money for SALC, and since then has raised tens of thousands of dollars to support SALC’s mission.

Each year at the Campaign for Equal Justice Awards Luncheon, Markowitz Herbold is honored as a Guardian of Justice--one of only a handful of law firms in Oregon to raise more than a $1,000 per attorney for legal aid.

The firm’s lawyers and staff serve on boards for organizations such as:

  • Scouts BSA
  • Campaign for Equal Justice
  • Classroom Law Project
  • Oregon Justice Resource Center
  • Oregon Lawyers Against Hunger
  • Outside In
  • Partners in Diversity
  • Quechua Benefit
  • Special Olympics
  • St. Andrew Legal Clinic

In addition, they serve on dozens of professional boards and committees, including prominent positions with: Oregon State Bar Association; Oregon Women Lawyers; Oregon Hispanic Bar Association; Oregon Pacific Asian Pacific American Bar Association; American Inns of Court; Multnomah Bar Association; Federal Bar Association; American College of Trial Lawyers; and American Board of Trial Advocates.

Pro Bono

Our attorneys often volunteer to represent low-income community members in court. Through the Legal Aid Society of Oregon (LASO), we represent survivors of domestic violence in contested Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities Abuse Prevention Act hearings, contested Family Abuse Prevention Act restraining order hearings, and other protective order hearings. Our attorneys also volunteer to represent claimants in hearings and appeals for unemployment insurance benefits.

Markowitz Herbold is also a member of the U.S. District Court, District of Oregon’s Pro Bono Panel, representing indigent clients by appointment from the court’s judges and magistrate judges.

Our attorneys also volunteer with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal’s Pro Bono program and are helping to pilot a pro se clinic for the Oregon U.S. District Court.
