The Oregon State Bar’s Sustainable Future Section announced that Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf is the recipient of the 2013 Sustainable Law Office Leadership Award. The honor recognizes one law firm in Oregon each year for its innovative sustainability practices.
MHGM won the award for having the most “innovative practice”. The Sustainable Future Section was impressed with the firm’s It Saves to Be Green Scholarship Fund for employees. The scholarship provides funding for employees’ personal initiatives that benefit the environment. For example, one employee received a scholarship to purchase a compost bin for his home. Another recipient received a scholarship to purchase a Go Box, an innovative reusable container for food vendors and their customers.
Sustainability has been an important subject for the firm for many years. MHGM currently purchases Renewable Energy Certificates and Carbon Offsets to balance the firm’s unavoidable carbon emissions due to employee travel. The firm also uses recycled paper, avoids the use of paper plates and cups, and encourage employees to use alternative transportation to and from work.
