Oregon Women Lawyers receives national recognition for Women’s Trial Academy

June 22, 2015

The National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations (NCWBA) has announced that the recipient of its 2015 Outstanding Member Program Award is the Rothauge & Kaner Women’s Trial Academy, sponsored by Oregon Women Lawyers (OWLS) and law firm Markowitz Herbold. The eight-month program is designed for young women litigators with three to six years of experience. The program addresses some of the unique challenges faced by women lawyers in the courtroom and trains them to turn perceived disadvantages into strengths and winning strategies.

The Outstanding Member Program Award, first presented in 2008, recognizes innovative women’s bar programs and services which primarily provide training and other benefits for their members. The purpose of the award is both to honor the work of the organization selected and to inspire other women’s bar groups to consider creating similar programs in their own associations and communities.

The award will be presented at a luncheon during the 2015 Women’s Bar Leadership Summit, Forging New Paths – Women, Careers & the Law, to be held on Friday, July 31 in Chicago.

Oregon Women Lawyers, which celebrated its 25th year in 2014, has a membership of over 1400. Although the majority of members are lawyers, anyone who supports its mission: To transform the practice of law and ensure justice and equality by advancing women and minorities in the legal profession is welcome to join.

The NCWBA, an affiliate of the American Bar Association, is an “association of associations,” serving to focus the collective strength of state and local women’s bar groups.  Founded in New Orleans in 1981, the NCWBA has helped women’s bar organizations better serve their own memberships by providing networking opportunities and sharing resources.  For more information, go to

Membership in a women’s bar group is always voluntary.  Although women’s bar groups emphasize issues of particular concern to women in the legal profession, they are always open to men.
